Helping has always been in my nature. As a child, I always loved helping anyone that I could. It could be as simple as being the teacher’s helper in elementary school or helping my parents translate during doctor visits. It sounds very simple, but I gained a lot of experience and knowledge through helping as well as a great pleasure for doing so.
My parents and five siblings left their hometown in Mexico seeking opportunities in New York. Later on my brother and I were born in the United States. When I was about two-years old, my family worked in the fields harvesting lettuce and onions. I am the youngest of six siblings, all much older than me, and although there is a big difference in age, my siblings were always there for me. They would often give me advice, sometimes on things I did not understand yet, but I was always grateful for their words. The most valuable advice they gave me was to stay in school and continue my education. I was the first from my family to go to college.
I was fortunate enough to be recruited and enrolled in to the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at The State University of New York College at Oneonta (SUNY Oneonta). They truly were and are till this day my family away from home. As an undergrad, I stayed actively involved in CAMP. I often participated in the annual events that they coordinate and host for high school migrant students from all over New York. I gained a lot of knowledge from working in their office for over two years. After graduating, I continued to work with them as a secretary position as well as assisting students with whatever they needed. It was a great and rewarding experience!
I am very excited to be working with ESCORT as the new Hotline Specialist and am eager to help where I can.
